30 Day Monster Challenge 2013

Update: I'm just going to keep updating this file to keep them all together.

The first five 30 Day Monsters: Harpy, Centaur, Slime, Naga and Mermaid. [Hmm. Not happy with the arrangement of these pictures. Might alter them later.]

I haven't been able to draw much lately due to being busy with various stuff, so I decided I'd doodle a chibi monster every night before bed to keep myself loose. These are mostly going to be doodles so I'm deliberately not making them too complicated, though as time goes on and I get back into the groove they'll probably drift that way. I'm also trying to rein myself in and keep the designs pretty traditional, just so I don't spend too much time on them.

#1 Harpy: This is loosely based on a male harpy I designed a few years back. This was super simple and even then I struggled with it. So out of practice. D:

#2 Centaur: Just a goofy joke I fell back on my old pony art to try and remember what horse legs were drawn like. I suppose this should technically have a mature rating because of her chest. Oh well!

#3 Slime: I really wanted to try do something unique with slimes, but forced myself into something simple instead. I think I spent more time on her ice tray than on her. That tray is also way too deep.

#4 Naga: Snakes have started waking up for the Summer around my town and I rarely go to work without seeing one splattered all over the road. (Either that car is super tiny, or this naga is huge)

#5 Mermaid: I had a couple of hours on a train today so I spent the time drawing this, hence it being a significant jump in quality over the other ones. Originally I was just going to do Laira but I decided she was too much of an anthro to qualify as a straight mermaid, so she just got a cameo instead.
Fun fact: I didn't realize till afterwords, but the mermaid's head is loosely symmetrical to her tail, even down to her face markings.

#6 Spider: The spider actually hung me up for a while on this and this is actually my second full attempt. Originally I wanted a sporty, parkourish thing, but it kept coming out really boring. In the end I just decided to make it really monstrous instead of human.

#7 Plant: I went with one of my own characters here and kind of regret it. Flaura doesn't actually look very plant like despite being a plant. I thought about going back to do this again but just decided to move on.

#8 Octomaid: I just went literal with the octomaid for this and was actually really happy with the result. I was helping someone with how to draw curly hair so they were kind of on my mind.

#9 Demon: Nothing really special here. I went in wanting gigantic horns and hooves and that was pretty much it!

#10 Succubus: Blegh. Really don't like this. I like the idea but I was really off this night and the picture came out really badly.
